Amy Griffin Commits to Play Field Hockey at Middlebury

The New Trier Girls Hockey team is proud to announce that defenseman Amy Griffin (#17) has committed to play NCAA Division III field hockey at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont.

“I started playing travel field hockey for Windy City Field Hockey when I was 12. Since then, I have participated with them for the indoor and outdoor seasons. I took part in USA Field Hockey’s futures program as a U14 and U16. Mark Morgan and Katie Beach have both been incredible coaches and have supported me throughout my process. I had thought that I wanted a big school in a city, and I actually only visited Middlebury as an option without ever thinking I’d end up there. However, from the first time I played on their field, I fell in with the team and the campus. I can’t wait for to head to Vermont in the fall!”

Congrats Amy!

Be sure to choose the Girls teams when donating as they will be "competing" against the Boys teams to see which team can raise the most money. And please share this link with anyone who you think might want to help this great cause.

Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation was founded in 1992 in memory of eight-year-old Barret “Bear” Krupa who died after a five and a half year battle with Wilms Tumor, a pediatric cancer.  The mission of Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation is to eliminate pediatric cancer and to provide hope and support to those who are touched by it.  The funds collected by the New Trier hockey players will go to Bear Necessities’ Bear Hugs Program which supports cancer patients (ages 0-19) as well as their immediate families as they face the many challenges that accompany the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric cancer.  A Bear Hug is a customized experience that brightens the life of a child going through cancer and helps him or her feel like a kid.

Lenny Munson Named Varsity Coach

Prospective Players, Parents, and Friends of NTGH:

The Board of New Trier Girls Hockey and I are pleased to announce that Lenny Munson has been appointed the Head Coach for Varsity, succeeding Bill Brush.  We wish to thank Bill for his efforts this past year which contributed to Varsity’s success, including winning the Girls High School State Championship this past March.

Lenny has a long and distinguished hockey career as a player and high school coach.  Growing up in Glenview, Lenny played for the Glenview All Stars through Bantam, Loyola Academy, and the Chicago Minor Hawk AAA team.  He played Junior A hockey for the Chicago Cougars before going to the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point to play Division II hockey.  Lenny was an assistant coach for New Trier Green for fourteen seasons during which they enjoyed much success, including winning a number of state championships.  Lenny also served as the goalie coach for the New Trier boys program.  Two years ago, he was our assistant Varsity coach and last year he was the girls goalie coach.  Lenny and his wife Amy live in Wilmette with their three children who all play hockey: Dillon at Miami University in Oxford Ohio, Taylor at Colby College, and Cole is a squirt goalie.

The Board is very excited to have Lenny as the Varsity Head Coach and believe the program will benefit from his familiarity with high school hockey, the New Trier programs, and our players.

Ned Forsberg, President
New Trier Girls Hockey

2017 Alumni Game Great Success!

The 2017 New Trier Girls Alumni Game on December 23rd at the Wilmette Centennial Ice rinks was fabulous! Over 30 Alumni whose high school playing careers spanned from the mid 2000's to last year played in the game. Many of these young women went on to play D1, D3 and club hockey. They were joined on the ice by some current NTGH players. Many family members and friends attended the game. It was a fun event that provided the players and their families the opportunity to reconnect with former teammates and other players of the great sport we love.

Our thanks to everyone involved for a very special evening of hockey fun and friendship.

GLASA Falcons Champs!

As a follow up to the very successful Seniors on Sleds fundraiser, we are happy to announce that the GLASA Falcons recently won their second USA Hockey National Championship in San Jose! They had to beat teams from Detroit, Denver, Phoenix and Anchorage to do so. Doug Kasamis, manager of GLASA Falcons Sled Hockey, sent the picture below along with a note thanking the New Trier hockey organizations for the support necessary to build their team and find success. NTGH is so happy for the GLASA Falcons proud to support their organization.

Seniors on Sleds A Huge Success!

Last Sunday, March 19th, the New Trier Boys and Girls Hockey Clubs hosted an inaugural exhibition sled hockey game at the North Shore Ice Arena to raise awareness and funds for the Great Lakes Adaptive Sport Association (GLASA).   New Trier Hockey’s seniors and the GLASA Falcons players entertained the fans with their spirited play and athleticism.  After the game, many New Trier players talked about how much fun it was to play sled hockey, and how hard it was compared to their more familiar game.  Those in attendance were impressed with GLASA’s mission and the wide-ranging programs it offers for disabled athletes.  (Please visit www.glasa.org for more information about this incredible organization.)  The family-oriented fundraiser, which included Blackhawk Alumni, Chuck-A-Puck contest, Silent Auction, Raffle & Bake Sale, raised more than $7,000 for GLASA and created lasting memories for all participants.

The success of this event would not have been possible without the enthusiastic attendance of our fans and families, the help of our many volunteers, and the support of our generous sponsors: Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Blackhawk Alumni, Chicago Bulls, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Wilmette Bike Shop, @properties, Lou Malnati’s, Stormy’s Tavern and Grille, The Grand Foods, Spynergy Cycling Studio, Creative Promotional Products, Smith Design Co., Eggemeyer and Graham Orthodontics, Oak Technical Sales, Face Forward Medical Spa, and the Baillos, Graves, Marshall, Melgard, Mulhern, Pavlopoulos, Peter Raith, Snow, Solberg, Talbot, Tragos and Womsley families.  Thank you!

Thank you also to the amazing staff at GLASA, and the GLASA Falcons players, for making this event possible and showcasing the amazing sport of sled hockey!

New Trier Hockey RAISES $16,500 TO SUPPORT FIGHT AGAINST PEDIATRIC CANCER

In what has become a Homecoming weekend tradition, New Trier hockey players once again joined forces with the local communities in the fight against pediatric cancer.  On Saturday, October 15th, players from the boys’ and girls’ teams spread out in Winnetka, Glencoe, Wilmette and Northfield to collect donations for the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation.  Established in 1992 and named in memory of eight-year-old Barrett "Bear" Krupa, who died after a courageous five-and-a-half-year battle with Wilms Tumor, the Foundation’s mission is to eliminate pediatric cancer and to provide hope and support to those who are touched by it.  Through its “Bear Discoveries” and “Bear Hugs” programs, the Foundation funds cutting-edge research and provides for the immediate needs of the children and families battling the disease.

New Trier Hockey’s efforts on October 15th, combined with an online challenge (won by the Blue Team!), raised a remarkable total of $16,500, which easily surpassed last year’s record total.  One hundred percent of the money collected went directly to Bear Necessities and will be used to brighten the lives of Chicago area pediatric cancer patients and to provide essential support for their families.

As in prior years, the success of this year’s fundraising event would not have been possible without the generous support of residents in the New Trier communities, players’ families and friends, and the following local businesses where players collected donations on October 15th:  Dunkin Donuts in Glencoe, the Wilmette French Market, the Grand Food Centers in Winnetka and Glencoe, No Man’s Land Pizza & Grill in Wilmette, Once Upon a Bagel, Panera Bread in Wilmette, Ridgeview Grill, Starbucks in Winnetka, Glencoe and Wilmette, Three Tarts Bakery and Café, and Walker Bros. Original Pancake House in Wilmette.  Please remember to support those who support the Club and its philanthropic activities!

Ned Forsberg Honored

The Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame recently announced its 10th class of inductees. We are extremely proud to say that our very own Ned Forsberg is part of that class. Illinois hockey has a very long and rich history, due in large part to the foundation laid down by people such as Ned.

You may only know Ned as the President of the New Trier Girls Hockey Club, but his contributions to youth hockey in general, and girl’s hockey in particular, started more than 30 years ago.

Ned coached and managed many of the teams his children played on at Winnetka and New Trier and served as a director of the New Trier Hockey Club for 12 years. He helped start, and coached for, the Shooting Stars girl’s hockey program, which ultimately formed the core of the initial CYA girls program. Ned was one of three organizers of the New Trier Girls Hockey Program, which this year is celebrating its 16th anniversary.

He was a director of the Chicago Metropolitan High School Hockey League (“CMHSHL”) for seven years and was Vice-President Operations, Registrar, and Chairman of Rules and Ethics of the CMHSHL’s North Division for 13 years. He was a founder of the CMHSHL’s Girls Division in 2005 where he has been a director and Vice President Operations and Treasurer since inception. Ned is currently a member of AHAI’s High School and Girls committees. He also generously contributes his time to various AHAI events including the boys and girls All-State Games, which he has been coordinating for the past several seasons.

Ned's dedication and tireless efforts have extended long past the days his children played hockey because he truly cares and believes that all children who want to play the sport of hockey should be given the best chance to do so. Whether you know Ned or not, please make sure to say hello at the next NTGH game and congratulate him on this tremendous and well deserved honor.

We would also like to congratulate the rest of the Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2014. Please click HERE for a full list of this years and past inductees, and information on the induction dinner to be held on Sunday, January 25, 2015.

THANK YOU!!

The New Trier Hockey Club and New Trier Girls Hockey joined together at area stores on Saturday, October 3rd, to raise money for Bear Necessities, a Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Through their efforts, and online donations, this year's fundraising goal of $10,000 was achieved! Thank you to everyone who volunteered, and to everyone who contributed, to help make this year's project a huge success.
