Congratulations to Grace Hwang, a senior forward for the NTGH Silver Team, on being named a recipient of a 2014 Blackhawk Alumni Association (BHAA) Scholarship. Grace is the eighth New Trier Hockey player, fourth girl’s player, to receive this award.
The BHAA distributes college scholarships annually to the three most deserving high school hockey players in Illinois. Awards are determined from a candidate's level of community service, volunteerism, good citizenship, and academic performance as well as their hockey talent. The scholarship is $5,000 annually, for four years. Congratulations also go out to the other two recipients, Elek Wellman of Sacred Heart/Griffin High School in Springfield and Daniel Lorden of Jones College Prep in Chicago.
It is not hard to see why Grace was chosen for this prestigious award, once you learn a little more about her life outside of hockey. For the past three summers Grace has traveled to Costa Rica, Tanzania, and Bolivia, each for four weeks doing community service. Some of her volunteer work includes rebuilding and landscaping a primary school, building an orphanage, organizing HIV/AIDS awareness workshops for locals, and (Grace’s personal favorite) herding llamas. Domestically, she volunteers at a homeless shelter with her church and she tutors underprivileged children through a New Trier High School club.
Outside of hockey and community service, Grace’s favorite hobby is music. She has played piano since she was four years-old and has been playing the guitar for the past four years. She has used these talents for the past three years to work with autistic children, providing music therapy.
After graduating from New Trier this spring, Grace will be attending Middlebury College in Vermont.
The NTGH family is proud of Grace’s accomplishments in the classroom, in the community and on the ice. Please join us in congratulating her on this amazing and well deserved honor
